Effective training

Where do you start?

Perhaps you are organising a course for the first time.

Maybe you're doing the training yourself. How do you make it more effective?

Ask yourself five questions:

Who? Why? What? How? and Where?

Here are 37 things that from my research will help you.

  1. Recognise that Treasury is a technical area.
  2. Write down why you are doing the training.
  3. Write down what you want to cover.
  4. Explain why you are doing the training.
  5. Make a note of how long the training should take.
  6. Don't over egg the content.
  7. Agree the content with the trainer.
  8. Make sure the trainer has the experience.
  9. Get references.
  10. Ensure those attending have some degree of common ground.
  11. Give them an outline of the course.
  12. Address issues that are real to your business.
  13. Use case studies.
  14. Remember that some people like words, others pictures.
  15. Numbers can be important but use them to explain not confuse.
  16. Use your report information. It makes it real.
  17. Add your deals. People really like it.
  18. If you don't work in treasury ask the Treasurer to help.
  19. Pre-course reading is good. But make sure it's done.
  20. Speak slowly and clearly.
  21. Allow for questions.
  22. Keep it relevant.
  23. Ice breaking sessions do work.
  24. Concentration lapses quickly.
  25. 6 hours a day is a lot to take in.
  26. Simple explanations are best.
  27. Add some humour.
  28. Don't use too many slides.
  29. Talking is tiring. Take breaks.
  30. Prepare what you do well in advance.
  31. Don't expect people to become experts in a day.
  32. If it helps add a glossary.
  33. Testing can aid learning. But it's not popular.
  34. Keep an audit trail. Who attended?
  35. Complete questionnaires.
  36. More than 3 days is hard work for everyone.
  37. Finish at the appointed time.

As a result of the crisis the FSA has identified shortcomings in the way firms are governed and the way in which risk is managed. Whilst most would agree with these comments from the regulator, drafting policy to improve things is a difficult issue. One of the main problems the FSA faces is that not all firms are identical. Therefore policy must be relatively broad but at the same time flexible. An additional problem for policy makers is that governance and to a lesser extent risk is subjective. The FSA treads a fine line in 10/3 between prescriptive regulation and principal based regulation. NEDs in particular should take note of its contents. Let's look at some of the issues that are raised.
